Originally designed by Rowe Architects' predecessor firm, Marchman Technical College was organized around a linear arrangement of buildings and a central circulation spine that accommodated decades of campus expansion. More than 30 years later, the campus had nearly tripled in size, creating a complex collection of instructional spaces shaped by evolving career and technical education programs.
Program Challenge
Undertake the first comprehensive renovation in the College's history, modernizing aging facilities while fundamentally reorganizing the campus to better support its educational programs. The project required a strategic approach to space allocation, infrastructure improvements, and construction phasing that would allow the College to remain fully operational throughout the renovation.
Solution
Rowe Architects began with a comprehensive master planning effort, reevaluating the organization of the entire campus to align instructional spaces with the College's evolving career and technical education programs. Through stakeholder interviews and detailed programming, the design team identified opportunities to consolidate related functions, right-size instructional spaces, and centralize administrative offices that had become dispersed throughout the campus.
The resulting plan transformed an inefficient collection of spaces into a more cohesive, functional, and adaptable learning environment. Modernized classrooms, laboratories, and specialized training facilities provide contemporary settings tailored to individual programs, while flexible planning allows the College to respond to changing workforce demands.
Equally important was the development of a carefully coordinated construction strategy. Five consecutive phases, supplemented by accelerated summer construction, balanced budget constraints with the complex logistics of relocating programs and specialized equipment. This approach allowed the entire renovation to proceed with minimal disruption to students and without the use of temporary portable classrooms.
The transformation gave new life to the original campus, establishing a modern identity for Marchman Technical College while preserving the underlying organizational framework that had supported its growth for more than three decades.
