Site
Occupying the last remaining waterfront site on the University of South Florida St. Petersburg campus, the project presented a unique opportunity to strengthen the university's connection to the water. The prominent location offered expansive views while establishing a new focal point for the emerging campus.
Program Challenge
Create a new academic and cultural heart for the growing university through a major library expansion and renovation of the existing facility. The project needed to accommodate evolving educational technologies, strengthen connections between campus buildings, and preserve public access and views to the waterfront.
Solution
Rowe Architects designed a new 81,000-square-foot, three-story library and renovated the existing 26,000-square-foot facility, transforming the campus through a comprehensive approach to academic planning, architecture, and landscape.
Rather than treating the waterfront site as an isolated destination, the design integrates the library into the broader campus through carefully organized pedestrian connections, outdoor gathering spaces, and a park-like setting along the water's edge. Interior spaces capitalize on expansive waterfront views, while a rooftop terrace extends the student experience outdoors. A second-story bridge connects the new library to the original building, reinforcing the relationship between academic functions.
The new library incorporated advanced communications systems, distance-learning facilities, a teleconferencing center, audiovisual production spaces, and specialized research laboratories. The former library was repurposed to accommodate classrooms, computer laboratories, student services, and faculty and administrative offices.
Together, these interventions established a new center of campus life that extends well beyond the traditional role of a library. The project demonstrates how thoughtful architecture and campus planning can strengthen academic connections, encourage student interaction, and celebrate the distinctive waterfront character of USF St. Petersburg.
