About Rowe Architects
Founded in 1965, Rowe Architects approaches every project with a disciplined commitment to professional service and architectural excellence shaped to endure.
Our projects span a diverse assortment of typologies, with particular expertise in educational and public sectors, as well as historic preservation. Our firm’s size is deliberate, allowing our team to stay nimble without sacrificing the resources, systems, or capability of a larger practice.
Design Approach
Our unique approach to design begins with careful analysis, collaborative process, and respect for context. Our firm believes that effective architecture must respond not only to a client’s design intent, but also to financial, functional, and operational realities. Through close engagement with owners, builders, and users, projects are shaped to perform over time and reflect their setting with purpose.

Firm History
Founded in 1965 by H. Dean Rowe, Rowe Architects emerged from the influence of the Sarasota School of Architecture, the regional modernist design movement that shaped much of mid-century architecture across West Central Florida. Inspired by architects such as Paul Rudolph, Gene Leedy, and Carl Abbott, the firm embraced an approach rooted in climate-responsive design, structural clarity, and a strong connection to place.
Over the following decades, Dean Rowe designed many significant civic, educational, and institutional projects throughout the region, including the Science Center, Business Administration Building, and Nelson Poynter Memorial Library at University of South Florida; the Music Building at University of Florida; the Federal Office Building and Museum of Science and Industry in Tampa; Bellany and Valrico Elementary Schools for Hillsborough County Public Schools; and several private residences throughout the Tampa Bay area.
Dean founded the practice on the belief that architecture is fundamentally a profession of service. A Fellow of the American Institute of Architects and recipient of the AIA Florida Gold Medal, he was deeply committed to mentorship, professional leadership, and the advancement of architectural education. His influence extended well beyond the firm itself, shaping generations of architects throughout Tampa Bay and across Florida.
Among his most enduring contributions was his role in establishing the School of Architecture and Community Design at the University of South Florida, where he served as an adjunct professor, juror, critic, and member of the Professional Liaison Committee. Following his passing in 1997, an endowed scholarship was established in his name in recognition of his lasting impact on the profession and the university.
Today, Rowe Architects continues to operate according to Dean Rowe’s original principles of disciplined thinking, architectural integrity, and client service. While the tools and technologies of practice have evolved, the firm’s core mission remains unchanged: translating complex challenges into thoughtful, enduring, and high-performing design solutions.
Over the past six decades, the firm has received more than 125 design awards, including the AIA Florida Firm Award, the organization’s highest recognition for a practice. As members of the American Institute of Architects and the National and Florida Trusts for Historic Preservation, we take pride in our commitment to lasting design. Yet beyond awards and accolades, Rowe Architects measures success through long-term relationships, collaborative process, and enduring architecture.
