Site
Located at the center of campus between the Harborwalk Central Lawn, a major pedestrian corridor, and the university’s recreational courts, the student center occupies a prominent site within the evolving waterfront campus of University of South Florida St. Petersburg.
Program Challenge
Design a new student center and residence hall that strengthens the campus identity and serves as a primary gateway for student life. The project needed to integrate housing, dining, meeting, and event functions within a constrained waterfront site shaped by FAA height restrictions and coastal flood considerations while maintaining strong physical connections to surrounding campus buildings and open spaces.
Solution
The project combines a six-story residence hall with a two-story student center designed to function as the “front door” to campus. Organized around a central secured entry sequence, the building establishes a clear hub for student activity while an internally illuminated translucent stair tower at the northeast corner acts as a visible campus landmark and gathering point.
The design emphasizes relationships to the surrounding campus and waterfront context. A 7,000-square-foot ballroom on the eastern side of the building frames views of Harborwalk and the St. Petersburg skyline, while meeting rooms, study spaces, lounges, and balconies along the western edge overlook the adjacent recreational courts and student activity areas.
Environmental responsiveness played a central role in the design strategy. Residential units were oriented north and south to reduce solar exposure, while integrated sunshades protect glazing and simultaneously function as solar hot water collectors. Covered dining terraces extend from the food court to create shaded outdoor gathering spaces protected from morning and afternoon heat.
A material palette of precast concrete, metal, and glass, combined with selective accent colors, establishes a contemporary architectural identity for the campus while creating a vibrant and highly connected environment for student life, collaboration, and community engagement.
