Located on the Winter Haven campus of Polk State College, the Fine Arts Building (WFA) is an academic and cultural facility supporting the College's arts and performance programs, as well as third party productions. The aging building required extensive modernization to address deteriorating infrastructure, outdated instructional spaces, and the evolving needs of students, faculty, and the surrounding community.
Program Challenge
Transform an aging and dated 75,000-square-foot facility into a dynamic and contemporary environment for fine arts education and performance while addressing significant building envelope and infrastructure deficiencies. The multi-phase renovation required careful coordination to maintain operations, minimize disruption to the academic calendar, and give new life and vibrancy to a building meant to inspire students, faculty, and visitors.
Solution
Rowe Architects implemented a comprehensive, multi-phase renovation that transformed the aging Fine Arts Building into a contemporary environment for arts education, performance, and student engagement. The 75,000-square-foot project addressed the facility from the inside out, including extensive building envelope repairs, reroofing, complete replacement of major building systems, and installation of a new fire sprinkler system.
The renovation reimagined instructional spaces for band, chorus, and individual music practice, improving acoustical performance, spatial efficiency, and functionality. Flexible teaching environments and updated finishes create a more inviting setting for students and faculty while supporting the specialized demands of music education.
Public spaces received equally significant attention. The lobby, gallery, theater, and gathering areas—largely unchanged since the 1970s—were revitalized with contemporary finishes and a bold architectural identity that reflects the creative energy of the College's fine arts programs.
Careful construction phasing and coordination with the College allowed improvements to proceed while accommodating ongoing academic activities. The result is a renewed cultural and educational landmark that balances extensive infrastructure modernization with a fresh architectural character, extending the life of the existing building while elevating the experience of students, faculty, performers, and visitors.
