Originally constructed between 1888 and 1891 as Henry B. Plant's Tampa Bay Hotel, Plant Hall is a National Historic Landmark and the architectural centerpiece of the University of Tampa. Its distinctive Moorish Revival architecture, crowned by silver-clad onion domes and gilded crescent moons, has defined Tampa's skyline for more than a century.
Program Challenge
Restore three of Plant Hall's iconic minarets, addressing deterioration of historic masonry, structural steel, windows, ornamental details, and metal roofing. The project required specialized access to elevated and geometrically complex structures, careful preservation of historic materials, and minimal disruption to the occupied university building, all within the constraints of a limited preservation grant.
Solution
Rowe Architects led the restoration of three of Plant Hall's iconic minarets, preserving the distinctive architectural features that have made the former Tampa Bay Hotel one of Florida's most recognizable historic landmarks.
The work involved extensive restoration of brick and cast stone masonry, deteriorated structural steel, historic windows, ornamental woodwork, and decorative balconies. The minarets' distinctive stainless steel domes were carefully cleaned and polished, while their crowning crescent moons were regilded to restore their original brilliance.
The unusual geometry and elevated location of the minarets presented significant technical challenges. Detailed three-dimensional documentation and custom scaffolding facilitated access to intricate architectural elements, allowing repairs to be carefully coordinated while the University remained fully operational.
Faced with a limited grant-funded budget, the design team developed an innovative bidding strategy that prioritized restoration tasks and challenged contractors to maximize the work accomplished within a fixed construction budget. This collaborative approach expanded the scope of preservation work while maintaining financial discipline.
The completed restoration safeguards irreplaceable historic fabric and renews the shimmering presence of the minarets on Tampa's skyline, preserving an enduring symbol of the city's architectural and cultural identity for future generations.
